The work ahead for the Birkley Heynen Environmental Foundation, as we develop the environmental grants program, which is one of our main objectives, will require far reaching outreach and communication.

We are very grateful to announce that Kaptiv8, the branding, marketing and website design team that was created in Athens in 2011 by our close friend Gabe Brauer, will be our ongoing partner in this effort and has been central to developing the foundation’s brand identity and website. Gabe and his family watched Birkley grow up from being a little boy and we thank him and his wife Kelly and their children, Kaitlyn, Kylie, Ella and Ezra for having been so close with Birkley when he was alive.

Kylie Totten was one of Birkley’s closest friends and has agreed to serve on our advisory board for which we are grateful.

At the celebration of Birkley’s life, Kylie recited one of Birkley’s favorite poems.  We are grateful to have this space website provided by Kaptiv8 to post the poem here:

The Orange

At lunchtime I bought a huge orange—
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave—
They got quarters and I had a half.

And that orange, it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It’s new.

The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I’m glad I exist.
